Share a drive over the network in windows 7

Sharing in WindowsSharing a drive or a folder in a network is the most easiest way to exchange files across a network ( better than running around with a USB drive) even though an element of security and privacy is involved. Sharing of a drive in windows 7 is very easy but it will display the “Unable to connect” message in most cases. Here is the way to completely share a drive on a network without any restriction.

  1. Right click on the drive and select properties from the drop down menu.Sharing Property
  2. Select the sharing tab from the property window.
  3. Click on the “Advanced Sharing…” button and check the “Share this folder” checkbox.Allow Sharing
  4. Click on the “Permissions” button and a assign the permissions for the group or the usernames.Share Permission
  5. Press ok on the permission window and the advanced sharing window and the property window and close them.
  6. Now go to the “Network and Sharing Center” and make sure that you are not connected to the “Public Network”. (you dont want your drive to be that public… do you.??).Network and Sharing CenterThe sharing of the drive should be active by now, but if you still got error messages continue with step 7.
  7. Click on the “Change advanced sharing settings” in the “Network and Sharing Center”.Advanced Share Settings
  8. Make some changes to the settings on the “Home or Work” profile
  • Turn on network discovery
  •  Turn on file and printer sharing.
  • Turn on sharing so any one with network access can read and write files in the Public folders
  • Use 128-bit encryption to help protect file sharing connections
  • Turn off password protection sharing.
  • Allow windows to manage homegroup connections.

The network should work properly with the above settings.
