How to use VLC media player as screen recorder ?

VLC Media PlayerVLC media player is a free, opensource multimedia player that could play almost all types of media files.VLC uses its internal codecs to play the media files and it works on all popular platforms. Apart from being a good multimedia player, it can also be used as a screen capturing tool to record activities on the screen. Here are some simple steps to do that.

VLC media player hides a whole lot of features within its user interface. This includes track synchronization (this is usually done to synchronize audio and video if one of them is lagging or leading), adjusting the play back speed, extra video and audio effects etc. Apart from all these additional functions, its functionality can be further increased by installing additional plugins.

This article will tell only how to use VLC media player as a screen recording tool. For this just follow the steps mentioned below.

  1. Select Convert / Save option from the “Media” menu in the menu bar.vlc media player
  2.  From the resulting window choose the “Capture Device” Tab and set the “Capture Mode” to “Desktop” and set the frame rate in which you want the video is to be captured.VLC Media player
  3. After selecting your options press the “Convert / Save” button and a “Convert” window will appear.
  4. In the “Convert” window we specify the output file i.e the name and destination of the file and the format in which it has to be encoded.VLC media player
  5. After you make all the settings press the “Start” button and the screen recording starts instantaneously.

The screen recording can be stopped by pressing the stop button in the media controls of the VLC. If you press the pay button again, the screen recording will start again and this will replace your previous recording with the current one, so store the prevous recording to another location or change its file name before pressing the play button.

The recorded video file will be saved in the path and with the name you specify. You have a variety of options to choose the output format of the video file, since VLC supports almost all codecs. This enables he video to be recorded to satisfy your requirements rather than recording and converting it later (if recorded in other screen recorders) which reduce the clarity of the recording.

VLC provided decent quality screen video recordings (it depends on the format and the quality of the vdeo you choose from the settings) but the major disadvantage is that the mouse pointer and audio is not recorded if you follow the steps above. This prevents it from being used as a standard tool to make interactive video tutorials or other kind of screen captures where mouse movement and clicks have to be shown.
